Ball valves

What are Industrial Ball Valves

Ball valves are essential components for reliable shut-off and control of fluid flows in a wide range of industrial applications. Their robust design, choice of materials and versatility make them the solution for water, heating applications, steam, process industry, chemicals and energy systems.

Construction and Material Options
  • Body:
Ball valves are manufactured from carbon steel, stainless steel, bronze, cast iron, ductile iron, and various special alloys (e.g. Duplex, Hastelloy). This allows the ball valve to be tailored to corrosion resistance, pressure and temperature requirements of specific media.
  • Seats:
Commonly used seat material is PTFE (often glass or carbon-filled for improved abrasion- and temperature resistance), reinforced graphite for high temperature and metal-to-metal seats for extreme applications. O-rings and packings vary, for example, FKM (Viton), graphite or PTFE.
  • Ball and Stem:
The ball and stem are usually made of stainless steel because of durability and corrosion resistance. For highly corrosive or abrasive media, special coatings or liners are used (such as PFA, FEP, PVDF, UHMW-PE).
  • Connections:
Ball valves are available with flange connection (DIN, ANSI, JIS), threaded (BSP, NPT), weld ends (butt-weld, socket-weld) or as a wafer variant.
  • Wafer Ball Valves:
Compact, light and suitable for mounting between flanges, full bore and are ideal for limited installation space and standard industrial fluids.
  • Two-piece Ball Valves:
Two-piece or split body versions are easy to maintain. Often full bore, with anti-blowout spindle, anti-static version and suitable for high pressures (up to 40 bar or more).
  • Three-piece Ball Valves:
Three-piece design allows maintenance without removing it from the piping system. Possibility of rotating ends simplify assembly. Widely used in chemicals, food, pharmaceuticals and industry.
  • Lined ball valves:
For very aggressive or corrosive media, ball valves are internally fitted with a lining made of PFA, FEP, PVDF, UHMW-PE.
  • Metal/Metal ball valves:
For high temperature, abrasion or erosion, metal-to-metal seats are indispensable. Often fireproof and SIL3 certified.
  • Multi-way Ball Valves:
3-way (T- or L-port) and 4-way valves allow switching, mixing or distributing flows. These are available full bore, with robust sealing on all gates.
  • Tight Seal:
Ball valves provide excellent sealing. Many versions are fireproof and tested according to international standards (API 607, ISO 10497).
  • Wide Applicability:
Suitable for water, steam, oil, gases, compressed air, chemicals, abrasive/corrosive liquids and slurries. Widely used in chemicals, district heating, steam networks, water treatment and energy.
  • Temperature and Pressure Range:
Depending on design and materials, ball valves can be used for very extreme applications. Lined valves offer full compatibility with chemically aggressive media, even under vacuum.
  • Safety and Certification:
Many industrial ball valves are certified according to PED, ATEX, SIL3, TA-Luft (low emission) and fire safety standards. Anti-blowout spindle, anti-static design and lockable levers increase the safety.
  • Automation-ready:
ISO 5211 mounting pads allow easy installation of electric or pneumatic actuators, positioners and gearboxes.
  • Industrial Process and Chemical Plants:
For shut-off and control of aggressive, abrasive or hazardous media.
  • Water and Heat Networks:
Robust closure, distribution and mixing functions.
  • Food and Pharmaceutical Industry:
Hygienic or padded versions, according to EC 1935/2004, FDA, and USP.
  • Energy and Steam:
    High pressure/high temperature, including fire-resistant metal-sealed versions.
  • Compressed Air, Oil and Gas:
General use in utility, storage and distribution.

Conclusion

Ball valves offer highly reliable, versatile and low-maintenance control in virtually any industry. Thanks to their adaptability in terms of material, size, pressure/temperature range and design, there is always a suitable ball valve for every industrial application. A well-considered choice of type, material and certification guarantees long-term safety, performance and efficiency in every process.
